republicans' fiscal cliff counter offer on tax reforms and spending cuts. the gop plan consists of $2.2 trillion in saving officials a decade including raging the age for medicare from 65 to 67 and lowering the cost of living increases for social security benefits. they also propose overhauling the tax code to generate $800 billion in new revenue but without raising taxes on the wealthy. frn in a letter to the president, republicans attempted to sell the offer as the erskine bowles plan, comparing it to the same offer he drew up last year. >> i think he'd disagree. >> the co-chair of obama's deficit commission, but yesterday mr. bowles flatly rejected that connection. meanwhile, the white house is turning to campaign style messaging as a reminder of whose tax plan was chosen in the court of public opinion on election day. >> under my plan, first of all, 98% of folks who make less than 250,000, you wouldn't see your

income taxes go up a single dime. all right? because you're the ones who need relief. but we're not going to be able to get it done unless we also ask the wealthiest households to pay higher taxes on their income officials $250,000. the same rate we had when bill clinton was president and our economy kree aed nearly 23 million new jobs. >> and there are reports that republicans are considering a doomsday plan should talks break down. according to senior republican sources the gop would allow a vote on extending bush tax cuts for the middle class and nothing more. under one variation of this plan, house republicans would vote present on the bill to voice their disapproval but still allowing it to pass entirely on democratic votes. with hillary clinton wrapping up her final trip abroad as secretary of state, president obama is expected to announce his pick to replace her at the state department as early as this week. the white house says no decision

the obama campaign. that's now your top news. you know what? >> i'm trying to breathe in and absorb the last story. all right. there is a new voice joining the immigration debate with hispanic voters overwhelmingly siding with president obama for the second straight election. the trio of latino mega donors including eva longoria are launching a new group aimed at mobilizing that energy and enthusiasm. the primary focus is to grow a strong social media presence and help the white house in passing comprehensive immigration reform. they see this has a chance to work with republicans who may be wobbling after losing a second straight presidential loss. the secretary of state is denying she is running for president for 2016 insisting she just needs time off. michael bloomberg has another idea. according to "the new york times," blook called clinton to encourage her to run for mayor

in 2013. the call reportedly took place months ago and hillary said thanks but no thanks. this comes as a recent headline from the new yorker editor david riddick declared hillary is running. he reads that conclusion after witnessing secretary clinton as a main speaker at a conference in washington this weekend where he says a slickly produced film on her political career ran like an international endorsement four years in advance of the iowa caucus. >> okay. new jersey governor chris christie is asking for 100% reimbursement from the federal government for the costs of emergency response the state faced in the wake of hurricane sandy. christie said in a letter to fema that the economic damage in his state could top $40 billion. he also plans to couple to washington to press his case later this week. both christie and new york governor andrew cuomo are asking for full compensation for their state's efforts. the white house is also expected

to ask for more money. and just one month after the election, mitt romney is returning to the business world. the former republican presidential nominee rejoined the board of the u.s. hotel company marriott international. romney served on the marriott board for over a decade stepping down in 2002 before becoming governor of massachusetts and again in 2011 when he launched his second presidential bid. the romney and marriott families have been close friends for generations. romney even named jay, willard marriott, the founder of the company. and returning to health news now. you'll be interested in this. bifrpg eating disorders is being redefined as a mental illness. for the first time in over a decade, the american psychiatric association is updating the manual which is widely accepted as a most important book in the field of mental illness. the new label is expected to create a new market for professionals to treat the condition and apply for insurance reimbursement. they say it's too difficult to

distinguish whether someone is overeating because of depression or anxiety or a separate mental condition altogether. >> no, it's really not. >> i do because it tastes good. also included, asperger's is going to become part of the autistic spectrum. some would fear they would no longer be eligible for special services. >> two interesting health stories. american auto sales have reached their highest level in four years thanks in part to hurricane sandy as many drivers along the east coast raced to the dealers to replace damaged cars. with us now from london to take an early look at the markets, cnbc's steve sedgwick. good morning. >> very good morning. this is really good news. we expected something along the lines. for so long now americans have not been replacing their cars. the average age of an automobile in the united states is 11 years

old. the old is 20% or somewhere in the region of 16 years old. the replacement cycle seems to have started. that led to great news in november topping 15.5 million car sales in the month of november it was 1.14 million cars sold. a little bit of that was the replacement of cars from superstorm sandy. that is really good news there for the auto sector. the markets have been down lately. we had average to poor manufacturing data out of the u.s. in the last 24 hours as well. also keep an eye on the big accounting companies as well. the sec is taking aim at them allegedly haven't handed over the documents that the sec wants to see in relation to chinese companies listing in canada and the united states when those companies listed very often they performed really badly amid accounting issues as well. the sec taking aim at the accountants. >> all right, steve. >> actually, the london markets today are going to be crazy. when you talk to steve about that. >> out of hand. >> a lot of big news going on over there. >> yeah.

i'm sort of -- >> popping, explode. >> i don't know how i feel about reporting on these things. >> then let me do it. it's official, kate middleton, the duchess of cambridge is pregnant. they went public with the news yesterday earlier than they wanted to because kate was admitted to the hospital with a serious case of morning sickness. the duchess is not yet 12 weeks pregnant. the palace expects her to stay there for several days. news of the pregnancy drew attention from all over the world with the #royalbaby. the couple's first child will be third in line to the throne after william regardless of its gender. steve, i mean come on. london markets going to be going crazy today, right? >> i think they are. i think there are ramifications for the whole british economy. we've had an amazing year as well. we've had the jubilee and the olympics and now we're going to have a royal baby. now is the name game. hot money is on elizabeth. the problem is i'm not sure what

rg-3 finds running room along the leave side. he's got the first down and much more. but as he goes down, the ball pops loose right into the waiting arms of josh morgan who takes it in for a touchdown to give the redskins an early lead. still 7-3. redskins late in the second quarter, eli manning finds his receiver. the giants take a 13-10 lead halftime. fourth quarter now. griffin rolls right to his right and fires a bullet to pierre garsong for the touchdown. that is the game winner. the redskins beat the giants. first win over the giants on monday night football since 1985. rg-3 finished with 235 total yards and a touchdown and the redskins who were 5-11 last season are now 6-6. one game behind the giants for the nfc east lead. >> bill karins, if you were a

giants fan, get used to what you saw last night. the giants are going to be fighting it out in the nfc east with the redskins. >> yeah, but eli, i don't bet against eli this time of year. >> don't bet against eli. but i tell you what, he always has three or four games where he gives a headline writers for "the new york post" something to do and then comes back and wins super bowls. >> i'm going to go to more news from the nfl and give something they really wament. -- want. michael vick announced they're going to go with the rookie at quarterback for the first time in the season. vick struggled before being side lined with a concussion earlier this season scoring just 12 touchdowns against 9 interceptions and 10 fumbles. last year the vick handed vick a six year, $100 million contract that included $35.5 million in guaranteed money. vick's salary for the 2012 season is just under $14 million making him the eighth highest paid player in the league. and college football now, three
